about

Except for “Fou Roux”, this was the last song I’ve written for this album and for some reason it had to be my big magnum opus. I just wanted to create something that was bigger than myself and could capture the state of mind I was in at that very moment. I never knew that there was a colloquial term for the situation when people are simply locking you out of their lives and completely denying your existence. It opened my eyes to a painful world of human behaviour. How many people have been treating me this way? Did I ghost people by retreating in my own world and keeping my distance? Although it is one of the most intense songs I have ever written, the core of it was written pretty quick. To check if the phrasing of the words was in the right place, I started to read the words out loud without sining them. I discovered that these words also had a totally different sense of dept to it while read like a poem in stead of sang like a song. I decided to write a couple of extra verses that could serve as a spoken word introduction. I once had the privilege to witness the late, great Leonard Cohen in concert and I was completely blown away by his recitation of “A Thousand Kisses Deep”. There was only one problem: My voice. I've been blessed with a voice that could carry a melody but it does not have the dept I was looking for in this spoken word part. We tried different things in the studio by pitching my voice to a much lower key and even recorded a take straight from the bar at 7 o’clock in the morning after a night of heavy drinking Scotch and smoking cigars, but something about the sound was not matching what I was looking for. We ended up with the fantastic characteristic deep and low roar of Quintijn Lohman. I really envy his voice, but I guess that is a singer’s thing. We hate our own voice. At least I do. If my friends and family every wonder why I never call. I am definitely not ghosting you, I just cannot stand my own voice! While the album has an overal melancholic mood and "the Ghosting” is by far the darkest song on the album, I am very thrilled that the final words are the essential of our existence: Love! Love! Love!
